Best and Worst

The Hockey Zone went through all NHL players to decide who was the best and worst, most overrated and underrated, in various categories.

Best Player: Nick Lidstrom

Lidstrom edges out Peter Forsberg because he's more of a complete package. Makes little mistakes, has few flaws.

Worst Player: Steve McKenna

Had a decent offensive season, but he was getting top-line minutes.

Best Offensively: Peter Forsberg

Big, strong and talented, a real offensive force.

Worst Offensively: Kurt Sauer

3 points in 80 games last season.

Best Defensively: Adam Foote

A rock on defense

Worst Defensively: Maxim Afinogenov

Clueless

Most Physical: Scott Stevens

No explanation necessary

Least Physical: Valeri Kamensky

No other can match his softness

Most Overrated: Craig Conroy

You hear he's underrated all the time, but was he just feeding off of a hot Jarome Iginla?

Most Underrated: Brian Rolston

Solid on both ends, extremely valuable to the Bruins. The comparison made to him and Bryan Berard by the Sporting News was ridiculous.

Most Overrated Offensively: Todd Marchant

Had good numbers, but played first-line minutes. Will never match that production.

Most Underrated Offensively: Cory Stillman

His 67 points went fairly unnoticed.

Most Overrated Defensively: Marek Malik

His lack of foot speed allow opponents to skate around him effortlessly.

Most Underrated Defensively: Darius Kasparaitis

Some people still call him "Kasparminus". He was a +5 on the season because of his +20 in the last third of the season.

Most Overrated Physically: Zdeno Chara

He's big and tall, but he's not as nearly as strong as he's made out to be.

Most Underrated Physically: Brian Leetch

No one gives him credit for the way he sacrifices the body. He goes after much bigger men fearlessly. Jagr and Kovalev also were considered.

Best Contract: Paul Kariya, $1.2 million/1 year

There is no GM in the league that would turn this one down.

Worst Contract: Alexei Yashin, $90 million/10 years

I'm sure Milbury want a mulligan. Absolutely untradable.

Best Fighter: Georges Laraque

If there's someone tougher I haven't seen him.

Worst Turtle: Matt Cooke

0 fights this last season, runs away shamelessly.

Best Skater: Wes Walz

Simply flys on the ice.

Worst Skater: Peter Worrell

Looks like he wears skates 3 sizes too big.

Best Shot: Markus Naslund

Deadly wristshot, 48 goals last season.

Worst Shot: Peter Worrell

Yep, he's bad at that too.

Best Stickhandler: Alex Kovalev

Electrifying moves.

Worst Stickhandler: Peter Worrell

Lucky he can fight.

Steadiest Player: Nick Lidstrom

Mistakes are a rarity.

Turnover on Skates: Brent Sopel

Mistakes are almost a given.

Most Overrated Move: Colorado signing Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne

It was a great move, no doubt, and sure, they played great together 3 seasons ago, but neither one has looked the same since, they both seem a little afraid of traffic now.

Most Underrated Move: Toronto signing Bryan Marchment

The Leafs are getting second-guessed so often about this one. People wonder why Toronto didn't sign Wesley for only $750,000 more. Marchment at his age is still a serviceable blueliner and is only marginally, if at all, worse. Also, people mention the Leafs giving a second rounder for Wesley, They don't mention the third rounder they will get from compensation.

Best GM: Ken Holland

Makes good trades, good draft picks, good signings.

Worst GM: Mike Milbury

Luongo, Brewer, Chara and so much more got away.

Cup Contenders: Detroit Red Wings

Detroit gets the edge over Colorado because they are a lot stronger in goal and on the blueline.

Ovechkin Contenders: Pittsburgh Penguins

Do they have enough talent to win the Calder Cup?
